1911

John Browning's iconic single-action semi-automatic pistol, originally adopted as the M1911 by the US Army.

Also: M1911, 1911A1

The 1911 is the John Browning–designed single-action semi-automatic pistol adopted by the US Army as the M1911 and serving as the standard sidearm through 1985. Originally chambered in .45 ACP, the platform is now produced by dozens of manufacturers in many calibers. The 1911 introduced the grip safety, the thumb safety, and the cocked-and-locked carry condition — a design that remains revered (and copied) more than a century later.
