Case

The metal cylinder that holds the powder and seats the bullet.

Also: casing, brass, hull

The case (often called brass even when made of steel or aluminum) is the structural body of the cartridge. It seals the chamber against gas pressure, holds the primer at its base and the bullet at its mouth, and contains the powder. Spent cases are ejected after firing; they can be reloaded if undamaged.
