Cocked and Locked
A 1911-style pistol carried with a round chambered, hammer cocked, and the manual safety engaged — equivalent to Condition 1.
Cocked and locked is the everyday name for Condition 1 — the carry state of a single-action pistol like the 1911, with a round in the chamber, the hammer at full cock, and the thumb safety on. It looks alarming to the uninitiated (“the hammer is back!”), but it is the intended and safest carry condition for SA pistols: the safety blocks the sear and the hammer drop, and the gun is ready for a fast, light first-shot trigger press.
