Press Check

Confirming whether the chamber is loaded by partially retracting the slide or bolt.

Also: chamber check, brass check

A press check verifies a round is in the chamber. On a pistol: pinch the front serrations and pull the slide back about a quarter inch — far enough to see brass in the chamber but not enough to eject. The action is so common it has multiple names: chamber check, brass check, press check.
